Checkpoint Charlie was the most famous and crowded border crossing in Berlin during The Cold War. The name “Charlie” comes from the ICAO phonetic alphabet to designate the third letter.
This was the checkpoint of foreign travelers, GDR officials, employees of the FRG, Stasi spies and other lucky people that got permits to cross to the other side of the wall. It was here where the young Peter Fechter died while he was trying to escape, being shot by the guards of the GDR in the eyes of those who were in the west side. It was here where almost explodes World War III between the US and the USSR with a silent confrontation between tanks. It was here where many people gathered to protest for being separated from their families. Finally in 1990 Checkpoint Charlie was demolished completely.
Today it is the area where the districts of Mitte and Kreuzberg connect. Right there is the Museum Haus am Checkpoint Charlie (Berlin Wall Museum), which has a permanent exhibition on the history of the Berlin Wall, personal belongings of people who crossed there, etc.
In 2000 the first control house was rebuilt, besides the sign that once warned that “you are leaving the American sector”. There is also The Berlin Wall History Mile, a plaque commemorating the confrontation between tanks, the Last Kremlin flag and an outdoor exhibition consists of photographs and texts from people who went through Checkpoint Charlie.
Otherwise, at 100 meters away you can also visit the Deutsches Currywurst Museum, the German fast food dish par excellence.
Where is Checkpoint Charlie from Gat Point Charlie?
Time: 3-minutes walk.
Head southeast on Mauerstraße to Schützenstraße, then turns slightly right onto Friedrichstraße 43-45.
Checkpoint Charlie fue el paso fronterizo más famoso y concurrido de Berlín durante la Guerra Fría. La denominación “Charlie” viene del alfabeto fonético OACI para denominar la tercera letra.
Éste era el punto de control de viajeros extranjeros, funcionarios de la RDA, empleados de la RFA, espías de la Stasi y demás afortunados que conseguían permisos para pasar al otro lado del muro. Fue aquí donde murió el joven Peter Fechter cuando intentaba fugarse, siendo tiroteado por los vigilantes de la RDA ante la mirada de quienes se encontraban en la parte oeste. Fue aquí donde casi estalla la tercera Guerra Mundial entre Estados Unidos y la URSS con un enfrentamiento silencioso entre tanques. Fue aquí donde mucha gente se reunía para protestar por quedar separados de sus familiares. Finalmente en 1990 fue demolido por completo.
Actualmente es la zona donde se unen los barrios de Mitte y Kreuzberg. Allí mismo se halla el Museo del Muro de Checkpoint Charlie, el cual posee una exposición permanente sobre la historia del Muro de Berlín, objetos personales de gente que cruzó por allí, etc.
En el año 2000 se reconstruyó la primera caseta de control, además del cartel que en su momento advertía que “está abandonando el sector americano”. También se encuentra la Milla Histórica del Muro, una placa conmemorativa del enfrenamiento entre los tanques, la última bandera del Kremlin y una exposición al aire libre compuesta de fotografías y textos de la época de gente que pasó por Checkpoint Charlie.
Por otro lado, a 100 metros del lugar también podrás visitar el Museo de la Currywurst, el fast food alemán por excelencia.

Tiempo: 3 minutos a pie.
Dirígete al sureste por Mauerstraße hacia Schützenstraße, y después gira ligeramente a la derecha hacia Friedrichstraße 43-45.
