The Berlin Marathon on 24 September 2017

Come and enjoy a real party atmosphere in Berlin

The Berlin Marathon, a race with a running distance of 42.195 kilometres that has taken place annually since 1974, will be held on Sunday 24 September. It is one of the six events in the World Marathon Majors, an international competition that includes the most important marathons in the world: New York, London, Berlin, Boston, Chicago and Tokyo.

The number of participants increases every year: in 1985, 11,814 runners took part; in 1990, 25,000; in 1998, 28,000; and the 2015 edition saw the participation of 58,776 athletes from 127 countries.

The participants set out from the Grosser Stern Square and cross the entire city in a real party atmosphere with live bands playing music. The marathon ends at the historical Brandenburg Gate, which is just a 10 minute walk from our Hotel Gat Point Charlie.

Every kilometre of the marathon is an opportunity to discover Berlin, as it is full of the city’s history. The course takes us past emblematic spots such as Checkpoint Charlie, Berlin Cathedral, Alexanderplatz, the Reichstag or the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, among many others.

At Gat Rooms, we recommend arriving in Berlin on Friday to make the most of the marathon weekend. On Saturday, you can visit the Expo BERLIN VITAL sports, health and lifestyle fair and then take a stroll through the streets of Berlin.

At the Hotel Gat Point Charlie, we serve a special runner’s breakfast over the marathon weekend that includes pasta, energy balls and a lot more. Here are the photographs of last year’s breakfast:

Interesting fact: Berlin is full of advantages for marathon runners

A major advantage of the Berlin marathon is that the course is flat, which benefits the runners, unlike some other marathon routes which include slopes. Another positive aspect is that the temperature on the day of the marathon is usually between 8 – 12°C, which is perfect to prevent the athletes from becoming dehydrated.
